Lodz - The Jeziorsko Reservoir

The absence of a sustainable management plan for this water resource has caused an unavoidable failure to achieve intended objectives. Providing water to arable land and industries, reducing flood losses and promoting tourism were some important objectives to achieve at the time of the construction of this reservoir.

The lack of harmonization of economic objectives of this reservoir with environmental and social concerns has brought about a serious threat to ecosystem and tourism. The Jeziorsko reservoir is polluted because it is fed by the contaminated water of the Warta River and free drainage of nutrients and other organic compounds from arable lands, meadows and pastures into the surface waters.

Consequently, the physico-chemical and biological quality of this reservoir has degenerated due to the absence of any centralised waste water treatment facilities in towns along the Warta River and non-existence of waste disposal facilities in villages near the Jeziorsko Reservoir. Due to lack of monitoring of the sources of pollution, at present the Jeziorsko Reservoir hosts polluted water and toxic blue green algae blooms limiting recreational prospects.
