Case Studies

Description, Analysis, Evaluation

Using selected river basins, the project describes, analyses and evaluates planning practices in a proper, detailed way. With the help of seminars and study trips in the partner countries, as well as via discussions with regional administrations, the partners analysed the different national regulations for water course protection and evaluated the regulations for regional land development plans: primarily the EU Water Framework Directive, as well as other directives and conventions. Moreover, the partners pursued their own case studies at river basins in Denmark, Germany, Finland, Lithuania and Poland.

Major types of case studies were selected from different regions ranging from vulnerable wilderness tourism to forestry drainage harmed eutrophicated rivers with hydropower (Finnish rivers) and southern rivers disturbed by agricultural sources (Danish rivers).

In selected river basins that are connected to coastal areas, proper problem analyses and impact assessments were carried out. Major relationships were highlighted for spatial planning purposes.

In practice, landuse matrices were used together with GIS information systems to describe main relationships between land usage and legislative requirements. Besides normal literature surveys, group interviews and workshops were used in data collection and distribution.
